What is coaching?

Coaching is a process of communication and problem solving that allows a coach and client to focus entirely on the client’s interests, challenges and goals. You as the client set the agenda, select next steps and do the work. I as the coach ask questions, listen deeply, suggest other views, bust myths and serve as an accountability partner. It really IS all about you as a client.

How does coaching differ from counseling?

Counselors are experts who diagnose and suggest remedies. They help clients look at their past to resolve issues. Coaching is completely forward-looking. The coach is not the expert for a client’s life; the client is. A coach walks by a client’s side—not ahead of the client, leading. Coaches don’t diagnose, treat or fix their clients; they help clients discover their own wisdom and solutions.

How does coaching differ from consulting?

Coaches guide clients to their own solutions; consultants advise clients. Consultants focus on results; coaches focus on people. Coaches are hired to support clients as they achieve the outcomes they want. Consultants are hired to produce certain outcomes. With coaching, it’s all about you getting what you really long for. It’s about you becoming who and what you were meant to be.

How do I select a coach?

This is a good time to go with your intuition and instincts. Coach and client should feel a good connection. You as the client want to work with someone you trust and someone with whom you feel comfortable. Just so, a coach wants to work with her ideal client, too. The trust and comfort level are as important as credentials. CalendarA complimentary, no-obligation consultation offers a good test-drive for both coach and client. How long should I work with a coach?

There is no ideal length of time for a coaching arrangement. It all depends on the issues, challenges and goals you bring to a coaching relationship. Some people work three months, some six, and still others a year or more. Some work less. One person I know has worked with the same coach for years because it keeps him motivated and moving forward toward his own goals. Typically, one coaching session won’t help you deal with an issue enough to move forward. Most coaching is done as a monthly arrangement or with a package of several hours. It involves a schedule with set days and times, done by agreement between coach and client.

Do we meet by phone or face to face?

Most coaching is done by telephone. Therefore, a coach and client can live in states that are far apart—or even in different countries. That means you can do your sessions from the comfort of your home.

How do I know I need coaching?

It’s been said that nobody needs coaching but that everyone can benefit from it. If you have some life, career or relationship issues that would benefit from another person’s total focus—with you—on those issues, you may want to consider a coaching relationship. If you yearn for something different in your life, coaching could help you. The co-creative coaching process can move you to innovative solutions you may never have reached on your own. Coaching also gives you an accountability partner, a person who can keep you moving forward. The regular sessions add a level of accountability and motivation. Any number of issues in your life can be resolved when you combine your energy with a coach’s focus on you. (I’ve had coaches work with me on grief and loss issues, to create new dreams, to brainstorm ideas for my business and for relationship issues.) With coaching, it really IS all about you. Even if you aren’t sure specifically what you want to talk about but you’re dissatisfied with your life as it is, coaching can help you focus.
